The new hockey mode: the strange game number 51 and 52

Next season there will be 52 ranked games instead of 50. But who plays against whom in these two additional games? It could go out in gym classes like in the previous school.

The clubs have decided to play 52 instead of 50 games in the National League and the Swiss League next season. But they haven’t yet agreed who should compete against whom in these additional games. At the next league meeting on June 17, this sensitive issue should be resolved.

Two suggestions are preferred.

Proposal 1

A two-round voting process based on last season’s final ranking. In the first round, ZSC Lions can first choose an opponent from ranks 7 through 12. Then they follow Zug, Davos, Servette, and Biel. Lausanne will play against the opponent who has never been chosen.

In the second round, the seventh (Freiburg-Gottéron) can first select an opponent in the upper half (places 1-6), then Lugano, SCB and Ambri. Langnau then plays against the team that no one has selected yet.

Proposition 2

A delicate thing. Should the ZSC, for example, choose the SCB (ninth) for commercial reasons, or should it be better to play it safe and compete against the Lakers (twelfth)?

So there is a second suggestion: just draw the game 51 and 52. The same procedure is planned for the Swiss League.

These two additional games will be added to the National League game schedule on November 1 and February 14. Dates in the Swiss League have not yet been set.

No decrease next season: the National League will increase to 13 clubs

For the first time since 2004, the leagues are rocking the mode. Due to the crisis in Corona, relegation to the National League and the Swiss League will be suspended for next season. There should still be promoters.

In addition, more games (52 instead of 50 qualifying rounds) and more playoffs (with 10 instead of 8 teams) were decided in both leagues. There was great agreement between the clubs at the meeting in the VIP stadium of the Bern ice hockey stadium. All decisions require a three-quarter majority because they affect next season. The clubs even agreed on all points.

Denis Vaucher, the league director, spoke of “good solutions.” The decisions made in Bern should …
