The seats to be allocated in Congress are very competitive. Democrats are likely to defend their majority in the House of Representatives, but they find it difficult to win the Senate.
Americans didn’t just elect a new president on Tuesday. The 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate were also reallocated. Legislative elections are very important because they decide whether Congress will make it easier or more difficult for the future president to govern.
Democrats take fewer seats than expected
In the House of Representatives, Democrats have had a clear majority since the 2018 midterm elections, which they should keep. The Senate, which until now has been controlled by Republicans, is fiercely contested. President Donald Trump’s party currently has 53 seats in the second chamber and Democrats 47.
The polls had given Democrats hope of regaining a majority in the Senate after six years and thus dominating both houses of Congress again. However, to do this, they would have to win at least three seats or even four if Trump gets re-elected. With a balance of power of 50:50 seats, the vice president (Republican Mike Pence or, in the future, Democrat Kamala Harris) casts the vote in the Senate.
12 Republican seats and 2 Democratic seats were considered contested beforehand. According to the results obtained so far, most of the incumbents were able to secure their re-election. Among them was the influential Republican Lindsey Graham, whose election the Democrats were waiting for. The chairman of the judicial commission, who had gone from criticizing Trump to one of the president’s most ardent defenders in recent years, was able to clearly defend his seat in South Carolina. Iowa Republican incumbent Joni Ernst, an avowed Trump supporter, was also able to defend her seat in Iowa, which is considered unsafe. This makes it increasingly difficult for Democrats to win a majority in the Senate.
Based on the results so far, Joe Biden’s party has only been able to win one net Senate seat. In Colorado, former state governor John Hickenlooper defeated current Republican Cory Gardner. In Arizona, charismatic former astronaut Mark Kelly won against incumbent Martha McSally. Kelly’s wife, a former congresswoman, was seriously injured in an assassination attempt in 2011, which is why her husband is also campaigning for stricter gun laws. However, the Democrats lost their term in the Senate in Alabama, as expected. Former Republican soccer coach Tony Tuberville slapped incumbent Doug Jones hard in the state where President Trump is very popular.
Little came out with a lot of money
The results are even more disappointing for Democrats, as the party has invested more than ever in the Congressional campaign. It is estimated that the two parties together invested $ 1.7 billion in the Senate elections alone, and with 54 percent of that, the Democrats surpassed the Republicans for the first time.
In recent months in particular, the Democrats’ online donation portal has hit record after record, with small donors playing a vital role. However, the millions invested primarily in television and online advertising do not appear to have paid off in most states. The costliest Senate race in history was Democratic challenger Cal Cunningham’s $ 200 million election campaign in North Carolina, but he is currently behind incumbent Thom Tillis.
Either way, the race for the small camera won’t be decided definitively until January. Because in Georgia, where this time, exceptionally, two senators are elected at the same time, the winner must get 50 percent of the vote, and there will be a runoff in at least one of the two races.
QAnon supporter moves into House of Representatives
In the House of Representatives, Democrats currently have 233 seats and Republicans more than 201. Polls had predicted that Democrats in the first house would also make significant gains. The results of his candidates in these races were less convincing than expected.
Marjorie Taylor Greene’s victory in a Georgia constituency caused a sensation, moving a QAnon supporter to the House of Representatives for the first time. Greene is one of about a dozen Republican candidates who subscribe to the absurd conspiracy theory circulating on the far-right Internet medium. They believe in a secret elite, the so-called Deep State, which is supposed to rule the underworld. The members of this supposed secret government are “powerful leftists” like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, the super-rich like Bill Gates and George Soros or, in general, “powerful Jews”. The media is also controlled by this elite.
QAnon supporters accuse members of this elite of kidnapping children, enslaving them in underground camps, and using satanic rituals to extract adrenochrome from their blood, which they use as a drug and rejuvenating elixir. The only politician who, in his opinion, opposes the dark forces is President Donald Trump.
Greene’s success in conservative northwest Georgia was expected because his Democratic opponent had withdrawn for private reasons. In the Republican Party there was initially some resistance to the controversial newcomer. Some party colleagues had stressed beforehand that there should be no place for such people in the Great Ancient Party. After Greene won the primaries and was praised by Trump on Twitter as a “next Republican star,” the criticism quickly fell silent.
