The Lebanese army discovered several tons of ammonium nitrate near the port of Beirut on Thursday. This is reported by various media, including the state news agency «NNA».
The find is reminiscent of the terrible explosion in early August that turned the city into a field of rubble. According to the army, army experts were called in for an inspection and found 4.35 tons of the dangerous chemical in a total of four containers.
Customs officers had contacted the army. Army experts would now “deal” with the material, it is said. It is not yet clear where the explosive material came from or who it belongs to.
43 containers with combustible material
As the New York Times reported, port chief Bassem al-Qaisi told reporters Thursday that there were still 43 containers with flammable materials in the area. He repeatedly asked the customs authorities to remove the material.
And: Just a few days after the explosion, French and Italian chemical experts found more than 20 containers with dangerous chemicals in the wreckage of the port.
Triggered for reasons unknown
On August 4, the port of Beirut was hit by a devastating ammonium nitrate explosion: around 190 people died and thousands were injured. According to the government, the 2,750 tons of the chemical had been stored without guarantee in the port for six years. It is not yet clear why the material exploded.
The chemical can be used, for example, to make fertilizers and explosives. (support)
