On Monday, the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) reported 9,809 coronavirus infections in the past three days. The 7-day average of confirmed infections is now 3,891. On Friday this average was 3’744, a week ago it was 3’817.

Exactly a week ago BAG 8781 new infections were reported, one week before 9750. Is this how the curve flattens? No, Federal Councilor Alain Berset agrees and makes an appeal to the cantons at Friday’s press conference. “More measures are needed in certain cantons,” the Health Minister told SRF in an interview, referring mainly to the German-speaking Swiss cantons.

Some cantons are already reacting

The cantons of Graubünden, Schaffhausen and Thurgau have already taken Berset’s call seriously and tightened their measures: all restaurants in the canton of Graubünden will be closed, the canton of Schaffhausen will close museums and fitness facilities, among other things, the canton of Thurgau, among other things, the curfew for Restaurants, bars and clubs operations were expanded.

The canton of Aargau, on the other hand, ignored the warning. It dispenses with new measures and adheres to the existing protection concept. The canton is examining new measures to combat the epidemics “in permanent consultation with other cantons and the Federal Council,” the Aarau health department said.

Curve points up

Berset’s request to the cantons, especially the German-speaking Swiss cantons, to take further action is not a coincidence if you look more closely at the evolution of the number of cases in the individual cantons. After Ticino, the numbers are currently highest in St. Gallen. 64 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a 13 percent increase over the previous week.

The developments in the cantons of Zurich with +11 percent, Thurgau with +14, Basel-Landschaft with +5 or Aargau with +3 do not give reasons to expect a nationwide decrease in the number of cases. Also in the smaller cantons the curve is relatively steep. In Nidwalden there are +54 percent new cases, in Uri, for example, +18.

Obwalden, Appenzell-Ausserrhoden and Basel-Stadt are the only German-speaking cantons in which the number of cases has decreased somewhat today.

The numbers in western Switzerland are falling

At the beginning of the second wave in Switzerland, there was a great criticism of western Switzerland. Cantons such as Geneva or Vaud were the main responsible for the vertiginous increase in cases. Western Switzerland reacted and imposed drastic measures and restrictions.

Apparently, these measures have had their effect: if you look at the development of the last seven days, the curve drops steeply. In some cantons like Jura, for example, the figures have fallen by almost 50 percent in one week. The development in the canton of Geneva is also remarkable. The decrease in the number of cases by 26 percent has a very strong impact on the development of Switzerland as a whole, because the canton of Geneva has more than half a million inhabitants.

Now what?

Several cantons such as Zurich have already announced that they will comment on new measures throughout the week. In view of the tense situation in the crown, it no longer seems impossible whether the Federal Council can order even stricter measures on Friday.
