The first vaccination center has been opened in Basel

During the holidays, people worked hard in the Muttenzer field vineyard. The first Covid-19 vaccination center in the Basel area was installed in an empty commercial building a few meters from the Corona cantonal clarification station.

Health Director Thomas Weber (SVP) was visibly pleased today with the effort made during the holidays: “Many volunteers, retirees, but also company employees, craftsmen who have interrupted their vacations so that everything is ready have worked. “.

Muttenz is only supposed to be the beginning

Mobile vaccination teams have been traveling in homes for the elderly and elderly in the rural canton for a week. So far, according to the crisis team, nearly 200 residents have been vaccinated. At the Feldreben vaccination center in Muttenz, up to 1,000 people must be treated with the coronavirus vaccine per day.

The rural canton wants to open more vaccination centers soon. The second will be installed in Lausen at the end of January. A third vaccination center is planned in Laufental. Laufen Hospital is currently being evaluated as a location there. The capacity of the inpatient centers will be increased to 3,000 vaccines per day.

Little vaccine was available at first

At the moment, this number is pure theory, because the vaccine is missing for so many daily vaccinations. For the first phase until January 22, the canton only has 14,000 doses available for stationary and mobile vaccines. As each person needs two syringes, only 7,000 people can be treated with them.

At the moment, only the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine, which was approved by the Swiss Medicines Institute Swissmedic on December 19, is available in the canton of Baselland. The crisis team hopes that more vaccines will be approved soon.

Born in 1945 as a frontier

Because the vaccine is so scarce, in the rural canton only people 75 years and older are vaccinated. This is because older fellow citizens are at higher risk. Of the previous deaths that can be attributed to the corona virus in Baselland, more than 90 percent are in this age group. The government assumes that around 31,000 people of this age live in the canton. Therefore, the next vaccine quotas would also be reserved for them.

Government calls for solidarity

Health Director Weber said during the inauguration that broad solidarity is now needed. The population must understand that particularly vulnerable people have priority in the distribution of vaccines. And if later other groups can be vaccinated, then it is an act of solidarity to vaccinate. Because this could make it very difficult for Corona to spread.

Registration is now also possible by phone

The first appointments were completed in one day. And the rush should also be great for the next contingents. According to Patrik Reiniger, head of the BL cantonal crisis team, in the future the registration options will be notified two days before the start of the registration process. The canton operates the website www.bl.ch/impfen for this purpose. Appointments should now also be able to be booked by phone.

Security personnel on site

It is important that only people who have previously registered can be vaccinated. Access to the vaccination center is monitored by security personnel. There, the reserves would be checked and it would be clarified again if the person willing to vaccinate really met the vaccination requirements.
