The Ferris wheel will rotate at Münsterplatz until January

Ironically, in the anniversary year of the Basel Autumn Fair, it will be canceled due to the pandemic. From Saturday, however, you will find solace at Münsterplatz. The Ferris wheel is spinning and it won’t be the only attraction over the course of the anniversary year.

Münsterplatz in a good mood

Switzerland’s largest Ferris wheel has been circling Münsterplatz since October 24. People lined up before noon to make one of the first laps in 2020. A consolation for the canceled fall fair.

“It’s a wonderful feeling what it is now,” said Manuel Staub, Director of Fairs and Markets at Basel-Stadt, in front of Telebasel. “It’s important to us that we can do anything,” adds Staub. The Ferris wheel and a confectionery stand that changes every two weeks will be on Münsterplatz until January.

“It’s great how people are interested in the old ways.”

Franz Baur, who has been ringing the autumn mass in the Martinskirche with the “Mässglöggli” for 31 years, still rings the bells today. But not in the spirit of the fall fair, but to celebrate the anniversary year. That also attracted people. Almost two hundred people watched and heard the show.

“I have to pause for a moment and say that it’s great how interested people are in these old ways. Even if it is not the mass, but the anniversary year ”, says Baur when he left the church tower.

What was special about the bell this year was that all the bells were ringing. “You could hear the bells of the mass, but we let all the bells of the church of San Martín ring to set an example,” explains the bell bell and former primary school teacher.

The anniversary program lasts a whole year

In addition to the confectionery stall and the Ferris wheel, information pillars can now also be found on Münsterplatz. The pillars report on the 550th anniversary of the fall fair. The pillars should also invite school classes to discuss the content of the fall fair and its customs. Elementary school classes can also take a free spin on the Ferris wheel.

But this attraction on Münsterplatz is not the only one. Starting in January, the information pillars will move to Barfüsserplatz. The Ferris wheel is being replaced by a new attraction, as is the refreshment stand, which changes every two weeks. As many booth operators as possible should be considered. “It is a matter very close to my heart,” says Manuel Staub.

Starting in mid-April, everything will move from Barfüsserplatz to Peterplatz. In August, it all ends at the fairgrounds, where the informational pillars and the selected attraction will continue to celebrate the anniversary year until Fall Fair 2021 and comfort sad Fall Fair fans.
