The federal government reports on Corona: “The number of cases is probably still high in the holidays”

The number of new coronavirus infections in Switzerland is declining. Looking ahead to the Christmas and New Year holidays, the numbers should decline further, said Virginie Masserey, head of the infection control section at the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG).

The situation is still slowly improving, but the decline seems a bit slower, Masserey told the media in Bern on Tuesday. There are still many hospital admissions and the number of deaths appears to be stagnant.

According to the BAG, the number of infections is decreasing in western Switzerland. For Masserey, this is a sign that the stricter measures taken there are working.

According to Masserey, the number of tests is “modest.” The campaign, which aims to encourage people to take tests, will relaunch on Thursday. The criteria according to which the BAG online questionnaire recommends a test would also be adjusted. The goal is to find as many infected people as possible.

Vaccine supplies are progressing as planned, Masserey said. The around 13 million cans reserved so far were enough for 6 million people, as each person needs two cans. The vaccine is expected to arrive in stages in the first half of 2021.

Ready for limited vaccine intake

The army pharmacy is ready for a limited intake of vaccines, as the head of the organization, Daniel Aeschbach, said. By the end of the year, the army’s storage infrastructure should be ready for all vaccines.

The army is responsible from the delivery of the vaccines by the producers to the camps and also ensures well-protected transport to the cantons, Aeschbach said. The location of the vaccines would have a high degree of protection for the military.

The fine distribution in the cantons is the responsibility of the cantons. The logistics concepts of the army and the cantons are constantly compared.
