The situation of the crown in Switzerland has not developed as expected by the federal government, says the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). The number of cases increased considerably again.
“We all have to get out there again,” warned Patrick Mathys, head of the crisis management and international cooperation section of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), at the start of Point de Presse.
The situation did not develop as expected by the federal government. Because the number of corona cases did not decline fast enough, there is a risk that even more drastic measures will have to be taken in January.
After the number of infections decreased in the second wave, now they would rise again, Mathys analyzed the numbers. The growing number of new infections has yet to be reflected in hospitalizations. But hopefully that will happen soon. The pressure on the healthcare system is still incredibly high. “There will be hardly any recovery phases for staff. But that’s exactly what you have to prevent.
Working group: “The situation has deteriorated significantly”
Martin Ackermann, chair of the Covid-19 working group, explained: “Sars-Cov-2 infections have increased considerably.” Only in the Lake Geneva region have the numbers been reduced. “The rapid decline in numbers in this region can be justified by the measures,” Ackermann said. However, the reproduction value in seven main regions of Switzerland is higher than 1. This means that the number of cases cannot be halved.
Three factors would make the situation more difficult: Temperatures are dropping, people are spending more time indoors and the holidays are also approaching, as Ackermann explained. If people had contact with an average of six instead of five, the risk of infection would increase by 20 percent. In addition, people are more mobile, which makes it even more difficult to track contacts across cantonal borders.
Canton Doctor: “Living through the greatest crisis of our generation”
Thomas Steffen, a cantonal doctor from Basel-Stadt and a board member of the Cantonal Doctors Association, explained what each and every person can do to reverse the curve. It is not easy to find energy, there are several “energy killers”:
- One works hard to fight the virus, while others don’t. Others gather in groups while you are not celebrating your own birthday. That can be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be. Because everyone who tried made a contribution so that the health system did not collapse.
- “We are all selfish.” It is often heard that the solidarity of the first wave has disappeared. But solidarity has now simply become part of everyday life, for example by wearing a mask. For example, there are Facebook groups like “Gärn gscheh – Basel helps”, in which people support each other.
- “Everything has become so complicated and tedious.” If you have the goal in mind, that is, not to allow the virus to spread, everything becomes easier.
You shouldn’t be overwhelmed by these “energy killers,” says Steffen. It is important to consider: “What is my personal contribution to reducing the infection rate?”
