The Federal Council suspends the new development of the Scuol ski area

The state government decisions released on Friday concern projects at the structural plan level, that is, long-term planning at the canton level. With expansion plans, Scuol and Samnaun are reacting to decreased snow reliability by occupying higher areas.

With the planned expansion of the Scuol ski area, Val Tiral will be rehabilitated. However, the Federal Council has serious concerns about whether a cable car project in this area would be compatible with federal law, as it announced. It fears considerable effects on the habitats of protected wild animals such as the mountain hare, the white partridge and the alpine ibex.

Therefore, the approval of the structural plan was suspended at the request of the canton of Graubünden. This opens the possibility for the canton, the region, the municipality and the mountain railways to clarify in more detail whether the area is suitable for ski tourism.
