Europe and Switzerland are putting great hope in relaxing the crown measures on applications that can be used to track the pandemic. One of these solutions is now noisy: it is the PePP-PT (Pan European Privacy Protection Proximity Tracing) standard, which is being developed at a European level.
Epidemiologist Marcel Salathé opened on Friday Twitter announces to resign PePP-PT. “I can’t endorse something I don’t know what it means.” Salathé is part of the expert committee that advises the Federal Council on the Corona crisis. He is responsible for the tracking projects.
Egger praised the app
A few weeks ago it sounded different: Matthias Egger (52), also an epidemiologist and chair of the expert panel, gave high hopes to the application at a press conference. It is still unclear whether the removal of the app project applies only to Salathé personally or to Switzerland as a whole.
Unlike surveillance apps like those in China, PePP-PT is Bluetooth based. If someone tested positive, people who were in contact with those infected would receive a push message. Egger emphasized that the app only works retrospectively and should be submitted on a voluntary basis.
Salathé wants an alternative approach
The details are crucial, writes Salathé. PePP-PT is not open or transparent enough. However, the idea of the application is not yet dead. ETH researcher Lausanne emphasizes that he will continue to support the central idea of the project.
Now he wants to fully dedicate himself to a project called DP-3T. It is an open source project. The data must be stored in a decentralized and anonymous way. Ideas could be openly discussed, writes Salathé. Research group DP-3T released more trial versions of a contact tracking app to test on Friday.
The corona virus currently occupies the whole world and there are new developments every day. All current information and figures on the subject are available in the Coronavirus ticker.
