An unprecedented mud fight ends with a clear verdict: Johnny Depp abused his ex-wife, so he may appear in the newspaper. However, things could go even further downhill for the Hollywood star.
The judge chooses drastic words for a court ruling: Amber Heard had to endure the “fear of her life” because of Johnny Depp, according to the decision published Monday.
“It must have been scary for her.” 12 of the 14 accusations against Johnny Depp, raised in an article in the British tabloid “The Sun”, have been proven to be true. It’s official: the Hollywood star has turned violent. And not just once.
Depp lost, in a process he instigated himself. The 57-year-old man had sued the editor of the “Sun” for an article that described in detail how he should have physically abused his ex-wife Amber Heard (34). The court dismissed his complaint. Actress Heard was “the victim of constant and multiple attacks” by Depp. With this, another big name joins the list of Hollywood men who blatantly and sometimes violently exploit their power over women.
The actor just doesn’t want to accept that. “The sentence is so flawed that it would be ridiculous for Mr. Depp not to appeal,” Depp’s attorney, Jenny Afia, said Monday. The court relied exclusively on Heard’s statements and ignored evidence to the contrary from police, doctors and other witnesses.
In the High Court process, which received worldwide attention, Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) and his 23-year-old ex-wife (“Zombieland”) covered each other with the bitterest accusations of the summer. For weeks they revealed details in court that many would have preferred never to know. The feces on the bedspread, the blood-soaked messages on the mirror, and the tip of an amputated finger were just a few. It cannot be understood how the latter was lost, the court explained. However, the fact that Depp stained a mirror with his blood shows the extent of his anger.
Depp and Heard met once while filming together, but their love didn’t last long – the couple broke up in 2016 after just 15 months of marriage. The actress testified in court that she was deathly afraid of Depp. He in turn called her a liar and accused her of taking advantage of the #MeToo movement, in which women rise up against sexual violence to get rich. However, it was completely indisputable in the process: alcohol and drugs caused Depp to lose control over and over again. He himself admitted it too.
The “Sun”, who almost took a backseat behind the prominent protagonists of the trial, celebrated his victory as a triumph of press freedom. “Victims of domestic violence should never be silenced,” said a spokesman for the newspaper, thanking Heard for his courage in testifying so fully. Lisa King of the aid organization Refuge also said: “Today we have seen that even power, fame and wealth cannot silence women. This is good news for survivors of domestic violence around the world. “
The verdict does not surprise Heard’s attorney. “We will have even more massive tests in the United States very soon,” he said. Because the fight against mud is likely to continue, just in a different place. Unlike London, Depp is suing Heard directly in the United States. She had reported on her experiences of violence in the Washington Post, but without naming Depp.
