However, less than an hour before the date, the government canceled the planned event: “With the measures taken yesterday, the Federal Council anticipated decisions throughout Switzerland that the governing council had planned for the Canton of Solothurn,” wrote the State Chancellery in a statement.
The authority continued to report on Wednesday on the implementation of the measures adopted by the Federal Council and other complementary measures. Later that afternoon, Solothurn’s health director, Susanne Schaffner, announced the reason for the new calendar: “Since the Federal Council decided yesterday, we must first verify exactly where there is a need for regulation,” said the government counselor.
Cooperation with neighboring cantons
The number of new infections continues to increase in the canton of Solothurn. On Monday, the health department reported 127 laboratory-confirmed infections over the weekend, 12 people are currently in the hospital. According to Health Director Susanne Schaffner, additional protective measures are being examined in several areas.
For example, the collection of contact data will be optimized and a restriction on the number of guests in bars and clubs will be checked. According to the health director, a curfew for these places is also being discussed.
There is an exchange with neighboring cantons about holding large events. The canton of Bern has already made a decision in this area: the State Chancellery announced on Sunday that as of October 19, large events with more than 1,000 visitors will no longer be allowed. This is because the number of cases in the canton of Bern “is currently doubling in less than a week,” according to the state chancellery of the neighboring canton.
The cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Aargau have yet to enact new rules regarding major events. The latter announced stricter rules for bars and clubs on Monday. As of Tuesday, only 50 people can be present in a club or bar at the same time in the canton of Aargau. The mask requirement extends to seated persons. The Aargau has also formulated stricter rules than the Federal Council for private events: contact details must be collected for private events with fewer than 15 guests.
The canton of Basel-Landschaft has not yet announced any stricter measures. On its website, however, the canton provides information on the measures it would take if the number of new infections in the Basel area increases significantly.
There, too, the number of people present in clubs and bars, as well as public events, would be reduced from 100 to 50. In addition, only 30 people would be allowed in private celebrations.
