A funicular, surprisingly steep mini-mountain, and ranger-led safaris – this is how a non-location should become a visitor magnet.
On November 5, after almost six years of construction, the vast expanse of The Circle will open at Zurich Airport; the timing could hardly be worse for a new shopping mile with connections to international air traffic. However, the billion dollar project also includes a spacious park. It could be even more in demand as a resort in times of crisis, with an area six times the size of the Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich. Airport officials presented it in advance today.
The airport manager, Stephan Widrig, wants the Circle to be an urban center away from the city. He uses Central Park in New York as a model for the park. The green area should be a counterpart to the hectic circle, an oasis of calm. When you first approach it, you realize that silence is a relative term here – the roar of the nearby highway is sometimes deafening, even when you’re standing in the middle of the forest.
