In order to maintain the most unlimited school operations in the canton of Zurich, a general mask requirement applies to all schools as of October 19, 2020. The measure is initially limited to the end of the year.
The Directorate of Education of the Canton of Zurich issued the corresponding order on Thursday. The measure could be lifted or extended prematurely depending on the development of the epidemiological situation, it says in a message.
The Directorate of Education justifies the step with the sharp increase in new infections in recent weeks. If an outbreak occurs in a school, extensive quarantine measures are often necessary. This has a great impact on school operations and also represents a significant usurpation of students’ personal freedom.
That is why the Directorate of Education is mandating a general mask requirement for adults in the schools of the canton of Zurich. This applies in school buildings, sports halls, care rooms, and break areas. The mask is not necessary if the minimum distance of one and a half meters to other people can be maintained in parts of the lesson or if protection can be ensured with appropriate protective measures, such as plexiglass walls.
