There are thousands of so-called defensive grenades in Rotsee of Lucerne. These are now recovering in a complex police and military operation. The effort is not entirely safe, but it passed without incident.
About 20 Siegwart DHG 16 hand grenades were pulled out of the water Thursday. According to the Lucerne cantonal police, it was originally planned that even more hand grenades could be located, marked and recovered during the various dives this week. Diving conditions, especially the poor visibility in the water, did not allow it.
On Thursday the Rotsee was cordoned off in all directions, there is a large police presence at the scene, as pictures from reader reporter BLICK show. northA large contingent of the Swiss Armed Forces is also dispatched to the police. In particular, ammunition disposal and mine clearance (Kamir).
Two army divers recover the explosive devices, after which they are properly disposed of. Recovered explosive devices are transported to Ruag on a special transporter, where they are properly disposed of.
Without danger to the population
In the vicinity of Search area there is also one Badi. However, the police have given the go-ahead. In an earlier operation, the area around the Badi already cleared of sunken defensive grenades.
If the defensive grenades are released into the air and dry, there is a risk of detonation, as the ignition system is reactivated. This finding is based on investigations by Armasuisse on defensive grenades recovered in 2019.
On the lake for 100 years
Grenades have been in Rotsee for more than 100 years. They were reportedly thrown into the lake by an explosion at a nearby ammunition depot.
Defensive grenades have been recovered from the Rotsee repeatedly in the past. For example, between 2001 and 2002: Around 960 pieces were taken out of the water at that time. About 24 of them were recovered again in 2019. (me)
