Rapid 39For decades, 000 aluminum panels, each a good meter wide and two meters long, hung from a network of steel cables in the mountainous forest of Puerto Rico and captured radio waves from space. From afar, the Arecibo telescope looked like a giant eye in the dense green of the trees. An eye with which astronomers searched space, also looking for signs of distant civilizations. This eye has been blind since Tuesday.

On that day, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that the instrument holder hanging from steel cables above the receiving vessel had crashed. No one was injured, but the telescope was destroyed.
