Not just confirmed cases of corona sThey are currently increasing rapidly, but so are hospital admissions. Some cantons are already reaching their capacity limits and in most of them bed reserves are being significantly reduced. “Hospital beds fill up very quickly,” says Andreas Stettbacher, delegate of the Federal Council for Coordinated Medical Service (KSD). “If we do not take any action, the hospital beds will be fully occupied in 15 days, in the intensive care unit even in 10 days.”
Hospitals had taken steps to create more space for corona patients in their intensive care units, said Martin Ackermann, chairman of the federal Covid-19 scientific working group. But even if the number of places were increased by 200, Switzerland would only gain 32 hours. None of that is the solution to the problem. There is no alternative to drastic measures. “We have to stop this development and prevent half of all new infections,” Ackermann said. So far, the task force has had no indication that the spread is delayed. But people did not act as they did in mid-March when their mobility was restricted. The level of mobility is much higher than at the height of the first Corona wave and hovers around 75 percent compared to the pre-Corona situation.
According to Virginie Masserey, head of the Infection Control Section of the FOPH, the number of hospital admissions is at the level of mid-March. At that time, the Federal Council took drastic measures to contain the virus. “The second wave continues, we continue to have exponential growth, the numbers continue to double in a week,” Masserey said.
In Switzerland there are currently a total of 1078 intensive care beds in operation, the maximum capacity could be increased to 1400, as in spring, but the prerequisite for this is that there are enough healthy nurses available. Currently 681 intensive care beds are occupied, of which 231 are Covid patients (33.7%).
The following table shows the current use of intensive care units in all the cantons. The occupancy rate has continued to rise, especially in western Switzerland. In Neuchâtel, 13 out of 14 intensive care places are occupied, in Valais 22 out of 25 and in Freiburg 20 out of 24.
