“That makes me sad, horrifies and angers me” – Schwellbrunn mayor on Superspreader’s wedding and a feeling of helplessness

Schwellbrunn Mayor Ueli Frischknecht comments on the superspreader’s wedding. In the interview she explains why she doesn’t blame the boyfriend and why she doesn’t expect a confinement.

In the Schwellbrunn community of 1,500 people, things seem to get out of hand. The Appenzell Ausserrhoden health department reported 18 new infected people and one death on Friday, October 23. Everything from the Schwellbrunn community. At the origin there should be a wedding with around 200 guests, in which at least one person who tested positive was present.

“The number of new infections could be much higher.”

That was the assumption made by Mayor Ueli Frischknecht in a radio interview with SRF last week. Many would not be tested to avoid isolation. A management for which the mayor has clear words: “That makes me sad, horrified and angry.”

The recommendations of the federal government have been known since the spring. Against the background of the rapid increase in numbers, especially in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, it is even more incomprehensible when isolated people behaved so carelessly. Frischknecht also expressed some helplessness that he had as mayor.

Mayor in his supporting role as a contact tracker

He learned about the events from the population. Concerned but also outraged citizens had approached him to inform him about the casual dealings of some Schwellbrunners. He wondered what he could do as mayor.

“Relatively little,” he concluded. It is the responsibility of the cantonal authorities to impose sanctions. But he tried to contact some “suspects” by phone. Frischknecht says:

“We have created our own contact tracing, so to speak.”

Could report on some experiences aha. Because despite the call from the community and despite the phone calls with the mayor, some people seem not to have understood the seriousness of the situation, as Frischknecht says. At the same time, however, it takes under protection the “vast majority” of Schwellbrunners, who would adhere to the measures in an exemplary manner.
