For the second time after 2018, Naomi Osaka is the Queen of New York. After 113 minutes, the Japanese used her second match point to win the US Open in the final against Victoria Azarenka. Overall, it is the third Grand Slam title for the 22-year-old, who also triumphed at the Australian Open in 2019.
After 35 minutes, there was still little to suggest a win for Osaka. The Japanese was behind a strong Azarenka with 1: 6 and 0: 2 behind. It turned out to be extremely error prone. In round 1 alone, he made 13 unforced errors and gave up his serve 3 times.
Osaka appears after a weak start
But then the 22-year-old turned it up a lot. He suddenly found his game powerful, while his Belarusian opponent made more mistakes. With breaks at 1: 2 and 4: 3, Osaka broke the momentum on his side. A little later, thanks to another breakthrough in service, he managed to balance the whole.
Azarenka fights in vain
The ninth in the world rankings also carried the momentum to the third round. Osaka dominated Azarenka with his powerful punches and would have had a chance to take a 5-1 lead with a double break. With her back to the wall, Azarenka made her way again and cut the game to 3: 4. Another break meant the decision in favor of Osaka.
