Nagra has three areas in the cantons of Aargau, Zurich and Thurgau suitable for a repository.

About a year and a half after the start of deep drilling, the National Cooperative for the Storage of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) reported the provisional status: in the three potential location areas Jura Ost (Bözberg, AG), Nördlich Lägern (AG / ZH) and Zurich Northeast (ZH / TG) a secure deep repository can be built. Nagra announced which region would be best to view in 2022.

“The results confirm that secure deep repositories can be built in all three areas,” explains Tim Vietor, Head of Geology and Security for Nagra management. In all three regions there is also sufficient space for the arrangement of a combined storage facility, that is, a storage facility where all types of waste (low, medium and high level) can be disposed of.

The subsoil has the right properties in all three regions: each region has a very dense and calm layer of Opalinus clay that is over a hundred meters thick.

Opalinus Clay is the clay stone on which the deposit will one day be built, and the most important safety barrier that locks up long-term radioactive waste.
