The next World Economic Forum (WEF) will take place in Bürgenstock NW and in Lucerne. From May 18 to 21, 2021, politicians and businessmen will meet in Central Switzerland and debate under the slogan “The great restart”. Before the region can benefit from the expected hype, now there are security concerns.

Security has always been a major issue when high-ranking politicians and corporate captains gathered in one place for the WEF. The health issue will also play an important role in the next event, which was postponed from winter to spring and has now moved from Davos, GR to Central Switzerland.

The meeting will take place on the condition that the health and safety of the participants and the hosts are guaranteed, the organizers specified in their announcement on Wednesday. The corona pandemic is also part of the WEF motto: Participants will discuss the topic “The Great New Beginning in the Post-Covid-19 Era”.

Leaders around the world should work on a common plan for rebuilding. The event in reduced form will include both personal meetings and digital elements, according to the press release.

Despite the uncertainty

Nidwalden Landammann Othmar Filliger (CVP) said at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency that he thinks it is good that the WEF is organizing an event despite the uncertainty related to the crown. The government is ready to support the organizers.

Financial concessions have not yet been made. With the final promise, now it is a question of negotiating the costs of the security provision. In addition to the WEF and the federal government, the canton of Lucerne is also involved, as events are also planned there. Filliger was unable to provide any information on the number of participants.

In the latest event, the army assisted with the protection of people and property and with the surveillance of airspace with services worth CHF 32 million. The federal government, the WEF, the canton of Graubünden and the municipality of Davos shared the other security costs of nine million francs according to a key.

Too early to approve federal aid

It is still a bit early for concrete statements on subsidiary help from the federal government or the army for the WEF in Bürgenstock, army spokeswoman Delphine Allemand said on request. Cantonal authorities would now have to first clarify their needs and create a concept. Based on this, they would have to ask the army for help. Finally, a decision from the Federal Parliament is needed to guarantee the aid.

The cantonal governments of Nidwalden and Lucerne were delighted by the location decision. “From an economic standpoint, we hope this has a welcome side effect,” said Landammann Filliger. On the one hand, this happens thanks to the participants and guests of the WEF, and on the other hand, the Bürgenstock is in the international spotlight, which has a publicity effect for the entire region.

The Lucerne government also welcomed the location decision. The congress and events sector, which has been particularly affected by the crown crisis, could benefit from this. The occasion is an opportunity for the tourist destination Lucerne-Bürgenstock-Nidwalden.

2022 return to Davos

The WEF at the Bürgenstock in Lucerne should only be a detour to the region. The organizers stated that the event should return to Davos in 2022. The event was last moved from Davos to New York due to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and protests announced by anti-globalization.

The new Bürgenstock Resort opened in 2017. The 550 million franc project includes four hotels with 383 rooms and suites, a health center, ten restaurants and bars, 67 residences and a 10,000-square-meter spa. (we inform).
