The Corona task force wants to take tough action. In the latest management report, the federal think tank recommends closing bars and restaurants and restricting private contacts to two households. If the measures were “implemented immediately throughout Switzerland”, they could help achieve the group’s stated goal of halving new infections every two weeks.
But apparently not everyone in the task force sees it that way. According to a report in the “Sunday newspaper”, several experts expressed their amazement about the central points of the newspaper. The recommendations are worded differently than what was previously discussed in committee.
In fact, it was agreed that the working group would only recommend the new measures if the number of cases did not halve in the next week or two. Some scientists also want to postpone closing restaurants, bars, or museums for as long as possible.
Switzerland should “prepare”
When asked about internal disputes, Taskforce Chairman Martin Ackermann (49) responds in an interview with the same newspaper. The body only defends “that Switzerland is already preparing today and that additional temporary closures remain an option.”
The recommendations were based on the knowledge that the current R value of 0.91 is not sufficient to achieve a rapid decline in new infections. At the moment, ten infected people infect an average of nine more people. The task force’s goal is to lower the R-value below 0.8, so that ten infected people only infect eight people on average.
And the ski areas?
Ackermann is convinced that closing restaurants, museums or sports halls would mean that fewer people would gather inside. “That would help to effectively break the chains of infection.”
However, he attaches importance to the fact that the working group “never demands anything, but advises”. Whether and what measures are taken is always a decision of the politicians. And there the will to enter another partial blockade is apparently small: “After its last meeting on Wednesday, the Federal Council stated that no new measures are currently envisaged,” says the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) of “Sunday newspaper “.
