The Swiss Under-21s are still victorious in the sixth match of qualifying for the European Championship. In Slovakia, Mauro Lustrinelli’s team managed to make it 2-1 thanks to two late goals.
Four days after the sovereign performance at 4-1 in Schaffhausen against the same opponent, Switzerland was nothing like the first match. In Nitra, the sixth largest city in Slovakia, young Swiss footballers encountered a physically prepared and defensively solid opponent, while they themselves went to work for a long time with no luck. Thanks to two late goals from Andi Zeqiri (87th) with a free kick and Dan Ndoye (92nd), the SFV team kept their white jersey despite being outnumbered from the 70th minute.
The fact that the Swiss only came into play with the real low point, a red card against Nedim Bajrami, who was substituted a few seconds earlier, in the 70th minute, fitted into the course of the match in Nitra. Also that the 1-0 for the locals fell in the 65th minute in a direct counterattack after the biggest Swiss chance to date. David Strelec headed the Slovaks ahead after Bastien Toma missed the other side just in front of goal.
En route to their miraculous late return, the Swiss received the support of the Northern Ireland referee. The Slovakians’ defensive action, which led to Zeqiri’s penalty goal in the 87th minute, was misjudged by the referee as a foul.
Thanks to their sixth win in their sixth game, Switzerland is still on track to participate in a U21 final for the first time in ten years.
