Why be modest with the million when you can have a few billion? There are a few in Switzerland who have already done it. They are analyzed annually in the UBS Billionaires Report.
As of April 2020, 37 billionaires live in Switzerland. A year ago there were two less. In 2018 there were 33 billionaires. That’s 12 percent more in two years. The lucky ones include biotech entrepreneur couple Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli. Her fortune is estimated at more than 14 billion Swiss francs.
40 percent of self-made billionaires
40 percent of all billionaires are responsible for their own wealth. As self-made billionaires, they are the first in their family to do so. Most of it is already in the second, third or fourth generation billionaires.
For example, the children of the founder of Ikea, Ingvar Kamprad (1926 – 2018). Peter (55), Jonas (53) and Mathias Kamprad (50) live in Switzerland and share a fortune of 54.5 billion francs.
Together, Swiss billionaires own about 112 billion francs. That’s even more than in 2019. At that time, they owned 88 billion Swiss francs. So not only have they become more billionaires, on average they are now richer as well.
Men dominate
The majority of billionaires come from the pharmaceutical, financial, retail, and manufacturing industries. Four out of five billionaires come from these areas.
Only 20 percent of billionaires are women. They are all 70 or older. Half of all male billionaires are over 70 years old. A quarter are between 60 and 70 years old. The last trimester is between 40 and 50 years old.
World trends
There are more than 2000 billionaires around the world. Together they own $ 10.2 billion. The fortunes of billionaires fell in 2019, but now they are higher than ever.
But billionaires also thought of the less fortunate during the Corona crisis. Between March and June of this year, 7.2 billion were donated. More than 200 billionaires have made public announcements. (lui / koh)
