It doesn’t look like this at Euroairport Basel for a long time – the waiting room is packed, travelers frolic at check-in. A BLICK reader is upset: “Nobody here keeps their distance. These conditions are hard to believe. “
The situation is similar at Zurich airport in Kloten on Saturday morning: a long queue outside check-in, families huddle with suitcases and masks.
Just before Christmas, some Swiss apparently move abroad. Some travel with their family, others want to go on vacation. On Friday night, four planes will fly from Basel to Pristina (Kosovo), two to Cologne and a few to Vienna, Berlin, Budapest or Belgrade.
Suddenly the Swiss travel again
Euroairport’s media office notes that families do not have to keep the minimum distance from each other. The measures taken by the French government, in whose area of influence the airport is located, are strictly enforced. It is the responsibility of the French police to ensure that these are implemented by the passengers.
Planes in Zurich are also heading mainly to European destinations on Saturday morning: also Pristina, Vienna and Berlin. But also London, Amsterdam or Brussels.
In recent months, the country’s airports have been practically empty. The Corona crisis hit airports hard. The number of passengers was reduced to practically zero. “It can be argued whether the Euroairport is still an airport,” Basel airport director Matthias Suhr said in the summer. Now it looks different again.
Nothing like far?
The reason for the rush at Christmas is likely that the quarantine list has been narrowed down to a few countries. Due to the high number of infections in Switzerland.
In many places, entry from Switzerland is possible, in some cases with a quarantine requirement or a negative test result. The latter is necessary, for example, to enter Italy. This rule now also led to an execution at the test centers (VIEW reported).
In Switzerland, the measures were tightened on Friday. The gastronomy is closed during the holidays, as are the sports facilities. Some might think: let’s go! (ha)
