Swiss is adding coverage for Covid-19 to its previous insurance packages with immediate effect. The Lufthansa subsidiary is one of the first airlines to offer its customers insurance packages with coverage for Covid-19 as an additional product for their trips.
In addition to flexible booking change options and the abolition of the booking change fee, it now offers its passengers another option for even safer planning when traveling in difficult times.
Insured against trip interruption
Effective immediately, additional Covid-19 benefits are included in the above insurance packages offered by the American insurance company AIG. The customer can choose between two options: the “Travel Care” option and the “Travel Care Plus” option. The Swiss writes in a press release.
And this is how the new insurances work: The travel care option insurance package includes a compensation payment for the passenger in case they have to go into quarantine at their destination due to a Covid-19 infection. At the same time, the option includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance.
Covered medical expenses
In addition to the services mentioned, the Travel Care Plus option also covers medical costs in case the passenger falls ill with Covid 19. A possible medical emergency repatriation is also covered. The new insurances can now be booked for travelers residing in Switzerland.
With customers barely booking travel in the current year due to the corona pandemic, the Swiss airline plunged into crisis. Due to the pandemic, 95 percent of the fleet was on land at times. In the first nine months of 2020, the company posted an operating loss of 414.7 million Swiss francs.
August we go down again
It is true that Swiss was able to gradually rebuild its offering in the summer months to a greater extent than expected. However, increasing travel restrictions held back the recovery since mid-August.
So Swiss has announced a savings program: the company plans to cut around 1,000 jobs over the next two years through a hiring freeze, part-time models with wage waivers and early retirement. However, the layoffs are not yet planned. (pbe)
