The Jura de Berne recorded significantly more overnight stays in summer. Tourism professionals want to take advantage of this momentum.

The Jura of Bern has a reputation for being isolated. This is an advantage in times of the coronavirus. This summer, the region received up to 40 percent more visitors than in previous years.

“We have many small hostels, campsites and holiday apartments,” says Guillaume Davot, tourism manager for the region. Nature is immense, and that is exactly what tourists are looking for right now. In addition, prices are lower than in the well-known tourist areas of Ticino or Graubünden.

People seek the outdoors. You will find it with us.

However, the rush of June, July and August also showed where it was necessary to catch up. “We want to create more overnight accommodations in the coming months,” said tourism expert Davot. New hostels, holiday apartments and hotels will open in the region soon.

The network offers better

But not only should more beds be added. The region wants to attract tourists to the Bern Jura with specific offers and to improve the network of these attractions.

There is, for example, the Bellelay Abbey Foundation. “Church, watch factory, glassware and psychiatry, the monastery has an eventful history,” says President Pierre-Yves Moeschler. The old town hall of Biel, which grew up in the neighboring town of Tavannes, wants to make the monastery known to a wider public. The foundation started the Bellelay Musiques concert series this summer. Next year, contemporary art will be exhibited at the monastery.

If it were for local tourists, visitors to the monastery should also go to the cheese museum in Bellelay, which tells the story of the famous Tête de Moine cheese. “We want to improve cooperation with the monastery,” says Oliver Isler. He is the managing director of the Tête de Moine Producers Association. A corresponding study has been commissioned.

Action plan with Bellelay as beacon

The Berne Jura tourism organization has worked with several companies and the Berne Jura Chamber of Commerce to develop a plan with 26 measures to attract more tourists. These will be implemented over the next ten years. One of the emblematic projects of this strategy is Bellelay.

However, one more problem remains: how do you get to the Jura in Bern? There are hardly any bus connections to Bellelay, for example. “We are working to expand bus connections,” says tourism official Guillaume Davot. This applies to the entire Jura of Bern.

If everything works together, according to the tourism expert, the limit of 50,000 overnight stays a year could soon be broken.
