Abortion of the 2019/20 season

As part of a conference call, the SFV central board decided today to cancel all currently suspended championship and cup competitions for the 2019/20 season with the exception of the Raiffeisen Super League, the Brack.ch Challenge League and the Helvetia Swiss Cup and do not rate these competitions.

After a thorough examination of all possible scenarios, the central board made this decision with the approval of the three departments of the SFV (Swiss Football League, First League and Amateur League) and the 13 regional associations and unanimously.

Main reasons for the decision.

On April 29, 2020, the Federal Council announced that soccer games in Switzerland would only be possible again on June 8, at the earliest, and only thus, according to the Federal Council press release, “in leagues with excessive operations professional gameplay “, which is exclusively due to the Raiffeisen Super League and Brack.ch Challenge League apply. Even for workouts that should be possible again starting May 11, massive restrictions apply until further notice, especially outside of competitive sports (maximum five people, no physical contact). Consequently, there is no alternative to canceling the current season. After consulting the clubs in question, the Swiss Football League decides whether and in what way the Raiffeisen Super League and Brack.ch Challenge League game operations will continue under the newly defined Federal Council requirements.

Consequences of the cancellation and evaluation of the contests.

In accordance with SFV regulations and external legal experience, the following applies to all canceled competitions:

  • 2019/20 competitions are not counted, with the exception of completed competitions, especially semi-annual championships in regional associations.
  • There are no champions or cup winners.
  • There are no promoters
  • There are no relegations
  • Participants in the Helvetia Swiss Cup 2020/21 First League, the Amateur League and regional associations are drawn from the teams that are eligible to participate or from the remaining teams in the respective qualification competitions.
  • The pronounced penalties (including fines) and functional open suspensions or blockages (including warnings) remain or will be transferred to the next official competition in the same category according to known rules.

Legal base

The legal basis for this evaluation is the betting regulations. This is based on the principle that sports decisions (title allocation, promotion and relegation decisions, etc.) are made at the end of a full season. This corresponds to the basic principle of recognizing sports performance in sport, that everything is possible until the last second and decisions should not be made before the final whistle and basically on the field and not at the green table. Therefore, a prize for the title or determination of promoted and relegated players after a canceled season would not comply with competition regulations.

The competitions affected by the decision.

The competition affects the SFV itself (in particular the NLA and NLB women; Swiss Women’s Cup; top youth soccer and football; futsal), the first league (Cerutti il Caffè Promotion League and 1st league), the amateur league (interregional 2nd League and 1st league women), as well as all competitions in all categories of regional associations (active men and women, men and women seniors and juniors, junior grassroots football).

Competitions excluded from the decision.

For the Raiffeisen Super League, Brack.ch Challenge League and Helvetia Swiss Cup, the goal is to continue playing according to official requirements. Clarifications are currently being provided. Since there will be no promotion from the Cerutti il Caffè Promotion League, it is certain that no club will be relegated from the Brack.ch Challenge League regardless of whether the season can be played until the end.

SFV President Dominique Blanc on the central board decision

“It hurts, but given the current situation, there was no alternative to the decision, which involved large financial losses at all levels. Players’ health and the common good come first. In addition to the health risks, it would have been a logistically insoluble task to find update dates for the ten thousand failed championship games after mid-June or even later. Extending the season beyond summer would have had a big impact in the upcoming season. Now everyone has planning security. When it comes to evaluating the season or not, the competition rules stipulate what applies. We are sorry that some clubs are being stripped of the possible fruits of a good season to date. “

Additional procedure training operation

According to the Federal Council decision on Wednesday, all soccer clubs in Switzerland can train in small groups without physical contact starting on May 11. SFV appreciates this decision and has created a protection concept for the implementation of such training. This concept is subject to the approval of the relevant authorities and will then be communicated to the clubs. This concept provides the conditions and conditions under which training can be carried out in small groups. The SFV leaves it to the clubs if they want to do the training in small groups and without physical contact as part of the concept of protection despite the end of the season.

Start of the 2020/2021 season

The start of the 2020/21 season (championships and cup competitions) will be decided as soon as possible, taking into account the official requirements.
