After a previous high of 2,129 new infections the day before, 3,254 new corona cases were added on Thursday in the last 24 hours, according to data from Swedish health authority Folkhälsomyndigheten in the afternoon. Now the country, which took a special crown route, is sounding the alarm.
“The situation is also deteriorating in Sweden,” state epidemiologist Anders Tegnel (64) told a news conference on the Corona situation on Tuesday. For many, he is the face of the special lockdown-free route Sweden is taking during the pandemic. However, just a few weeks ago, Tegnell agreed to impose local blocking measures to stop the spread of the virus.
Uppsala is becoming a corona hotspot
According to dpa, the number of new corona cases in the last week soared by 70 percent compared to the previous week. In Sweden, it is now particularly notable that, unlike the first wave, more young people between the ages of 20 and 29 are infected with the coronavirus. The student town of Uppsala is emerging as a crown hotspot.
According to epidemiologist Tegnell, the increase in numbers can be attributed in part to expanded contact tracing and more testing. But it makes clear that the virus is spreading more and more. Tegnell says: “It is a difficult fall, and it will be even more difficult before this is over.”
Avoid public transportation and contacts voluntarily
Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth-largest city, will now enter a local shutdown. According to the news portal “The Local”, city dwellers are encouraged to voluntarily avoid public transport as much as possible. Contact with people outside the home should also be avoided until November 3. However, there is no mask requirement yet.
The Skåne region, including the city of Malmö, which borders Denmark, should now adhere to the recommendations. At the same time, restrictions on older people in Sweden were lifted. Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren (46) said: “There is no longer any reason why stricter measures should be applied to older people than to the rest of the population.” (euc)
