Thanks to a narrow victory against Spain, Denmark advances towards the final of the World Cup in Egypt. Sweden turns off France.
Superstar Mikkel Hansen led Denmark into the semifinals on Friday night with 12 goals for a 35:33 victory over European champion Spain, thus dashing the Iberians’ hopes of a third title after 2005 and 2013. The Spaniards resisted as best they could. Even with a deficit of 4 goals 6 minutes before the end, they were not discouraged. But the change of course was unsuccessful in the hot final phase. For their part, the Danes can dream of defending their title after this victory in Cairo.

In the final they will face neighboring Sweden on Sunday. Thanks to a 32:26 win against France, the record European champions returned to the final for the first time in 20 years. Sweden won gold at the World Cup for the last time in 1999; the final also took place in Egypt. The Frenchman, who had to do without Luka Karabatic, failed several times in the attack because of the brilliant goalkeeper Andreas Palicka.
Friday’s semi-final matches at a glance:
- Sweden – France 32:26
- Denmark – Spain 35:33
