U-turn in Sweden. With the start of stricter regulations, Scandinavians will leave their special crown route on Tuesday. For the first time, conditions apply to meetings in public. Only eight people can meet. So far it has been allowed to meet between 50 and 300 people, depending on the occasion. Penalties are imposed for violations.
According to government order, schools and restaurants must remain open. However, restaurant operators must ensure that no more than eight guests per table.
Sweden has taken a less restrictive path than most other European countries since the start of the crown pandemic. Therefore, critics accused the Swedish authorities of endangering human lives with their strategy.
Premier makes a dramatic appeal to the population
However, the government has so far refrained from imposing restrictions. Instead, he only made recommendations for citizens. The restrictions now imposed for the first time do not apply to meetings in private apartments. The government lacks the power to regulate.
It remains to appeal to the individual responsibility of the people, which Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (63) did on Sunday dramatically. In a rare speech in prime time, Löfven spoke about the growing threat of the coronavirus. It expressed concern that the strategy used to date would not be sufficient to combat an increasingly deadly pandemic.
Löfven is only the third Swedish Prime Minister in the country’s history to deliver such a national speech. He said that “too many people followed the recommendations lightly.” The country must now pursue a harder course. (kes / SDA)
