Surprisingly, the Diocese of Chur will receive a new bishop
The Chur Cathedral Chapter will meet today to elect a new bishop. The news of the bishop’s election was only known on Sunday, writes the Catholic media center kath.ch. The “Tagesanzeiger” reported Sunday that it had learned “from a reliable source” about the upcoming bishopric election. The diocese itself has not yet ruled on the matter.

According to the Catholic media center, the 22 members of the cathedral chapter will choose from a list of three candidates approved by the Pope. The election was preceded by years of conflict in the diocese of Chur. This was occupied by conservative clergy until 2019. Since then, Peter Bürcher, Apostolic Administrator, has been in charge of the diocese.
Bürcher had not fulfilled the hopes of the reform wing within the diocese. A group of protesters filed a lawsuit against Bürcher in October for not listening to them. The dispute was preceded by the removal of the vicar general of central Switzerland, Martin Kopp. This had been publicly pronounced in favor of the state intervening in the election of the bishopric of Chur.
The Diocese of Chur has more than 600,000 Catholics. It includes the cantons of Graubünden, Glarus, Schwyz, Obwalden and Nidwalden, Uri and Zurich. (media wap / ch)
