On June 25, 2020, the 64th minute of the match between FC St. Gallen and FC Zurich runs. Aiyegun Tosin just scored 2-0 for the guests. From the Kybunpark stands, sparsely occupied by Corona, a fan shouts “Shit Mohrenkopf” at the FCZ forward.
He responds with a “Psst” gesture, kneels down and raises his fist. In the end, Zurich wins 4-0. And the president of St. Gallen, Matthias Hüppi, is beyond pissed off.
Authorities stop investigation
“I am shocked and angry,” Hüppi said at the time. “We do and use all the means at our disposal to find the person. We will find! “The FCSG files a criminal complaint.
Well, they haven’t found it until today. The authorities have closed the investigation into the racist for lack of sufficient evidence. But Hüppi does not want to give up and writes an open letter to the culprit.
Dear Mr. Unknown
At the end of June 2020, he insulted a FC Zurich player with his racist statement, treated him in an absolutely unacceptable manner and trampled on the basic values of FC St. Gallen 1879. (…)
I guarantee that we will continue to do our best to hold you accountable. We will pay the fine of 5,000 francs imposed by the SFL. Worse than this fine, however, is the fact that we people who are far less guilty have to constantly punish them and you, more than anyone else, can get away with it for the moment without atoning for your offense. They don’t even have the courage or attitude to at least apologize to Aiyegun Tosin.
At FC St. Gallen 1879 people of different backgrounds, skin colors, religions and mentalities work together in exemplary ways. Racism and discrimination have no place among us. Sadly, my personal hope to make this clear to you has yet to be fulfilled. But who knows: you may still realize that you must be responsible for your behavior.
With the best wishes
Matthias Hüppi, President of FC St. Gallen 1879
It remains open whether a racist can be moved by these words to a sorry apology. The truth is that the fallible “fan” has to be prepared for something. Because he definitely read this letter … (I read)
