FCB conceded its first defeat under Sforza – St. Gallen ascended to the leadership throne

After two rounds, FC St. Gallen are the only team still without losing points. Last season’s surprise team beat the newly promoted Vaduz thanks to a late goal away from home. For the moment, FC Basel have been classified below.

Servette – Basel 1-0

With Ciriaco Sforza, FC Basel still did not win in the league after matchday two. In Geneva against Servette, Basler lost first to Jasper van der Werff by a red card, then the game 0: 1.

The action of the victory in Geneva made FCB coach Ciriaco Sforza’s emotions boil even after the match. The 50-year-old sensed a scandal and said: “It is not correct to lose like this.” Sforza was upset on Sunday by various decisions made by referee Luca Piccolo, but especially those a quarter of an hour before the end. The Ticino referee judged a hand of previously substituted Basel Albian Hajdari in his own penalty area as worthy of a penalty, Alex Schalk used the penalty to make it 1-0.

Basler had been furious several times in Geneva over referee Piccolo’s decisions. For the first time, it caused the frustration of the FCB players at 22 minutes. Valentin Stocker had just started cheering for the so-called 1-0 when Piccolo reviewed the situation on the screen at the edge of the field and disallowed the goal for a foul. The next Basel clash followed eight minutes later: Piccolo sent Jasper van der Werff off the field with red due to a fault on the emergency brake.

Vaduz – St. Gallen 0: 1

The promoted Vaduz narrowly missed the next Super League hit against St. Gallen. A late goal by St. Gallen’s wild card Andre Ribeiro led the Eastern Swiss to a 1-0 victory in Liechtenstein.

The 23-year-old Portuguese rewarded the runner-up from the previous season for an increase in performance after the break with his 83rd-minute goal. Coming from behind the baseline, the attacker beat four FCV defenders and fired the ball from the six-yard box to the goal. Even Benjamin Büchel, who became Vaduz’s man of the game in the second half with several saves and a penalty (94th), was powerless against Ribeiro’s close-range shot.

The FCSG victory in Vaduz was good because of the increased performance, as Vaduz coach Mario Frick saw it, criticizing his team’s “lousy transition game”. In the first half, the local team had made the game even more to the taste of their coach. Although the FCSG knew how to stress the Liechtenstein team from time to time before the break, they rarely did anything tangible with the conquered ball.

Only once, when Lukas Görtler started playing alone in the Vaduz penalty area in the 26th minute and was stopped there by Denis Simani, did Mario Frick’s team have to rely on their luck in the competition before the break. The entrance of Simani on the scene would have justified a foul penalty for the guests.

Lucerne 2-2 Lausanne

Lucerne and Lausanne-Sport split 2: 2 – and in the end both are disappointed: Lucerne, because they did not win despite 67 minutes of excess. Lausanne because they tied ten minutes before the end.

Lausanne was just minutes away from its second victory. The newly promoted team eliminated the initial deficit after just 46 seconds. He quickly tied with 21-year-old Joël Monteiro (6th) and forced the switch shortly after Aldin Turkes’ break. But the longer the guests had to play, the more pressured they were, until Stefan Knezevic managed to equalize Lucerne in the 80th minute and after some good preparatory work from substitute Ashvin Balaruban.

There were three names to talk about during the game: two of them were absent, one left after 23 minutes. Francesco Margiotta from Lucerne and Andi Zeqiri from Lausanne were absent because their transfers abroad are imminent. And Vaudois defender Mickaël Nanizayamo was sent off early. He had mercilessly gotten into a duel. Although he also hit the ball, but after the intervention of the VAR, referee Dudic showed the red card.
