Cold and wet – not really ideal conditions for an exciting soccer game. But the match between Lugano and Sion offered not only fighting but also beautiful combinations, controversial referee decisions and great goals.
The highlight was a scene around the 70th minute. After a tackle from Lugano’s Adria Guerrero, referee Fedayi San correctly signaled the point. But the subsequent penalty was not as usual:
- Guillaume Hoarau competes, but fails miserably before Lugano goalkeeper Sebastian Osigwe. Since it moves too soon, the penalty must be repeated.
- Geoffroy Serey Dié competes on the second attempt. The second veteran also shoots, but can convert the margin. But Osigwe moves even earlier with the penalty, another repeat.
- Serey Dié takes responsibility again and is up to the task. Sion takes a 2-1 lead.
Zion’s jubilation did not last long. A good 10 minutes later, coach Fabio Grosso’s defensive team lost track of their own penalty area with a free kick from Lugano. Fabio Daperela kept this up and hit the ball over the line to make it 2-2.
Sion with slight advantages in the 1st half
Previously, Sion had been stronger in duels, had more shots on goal, and thus was deservedly ahead. Anto Grgic took advantage of a combination in various stations in the 40th minute to make it 1-0.
After the break, Lugano got stronger but only created a few opportunities. Stefano Guidotti used one of these to equalize in the 57th minute, before Sion scored the curious first goal.
So it goes
After the international break, Lugano will face the promoted Vaduz on October 17. The following day, Sion Lausanne-Sport hosted the Romand derby.
