FCZ beat Basel and also wins the second game with interim coach Rizzo
Zurich have a rare sense of accomplishment against FC Basel. Thanks to a goal from Antonio Marchesano, Zurich won the supplementary match of the fourth round of the Super League 1-0 shortly after the break.
For many years, FC Basel has made its mark on the classics. FCZ victories are the exception, clear defeats are more the rule. On Wednesday night, the Zurich team only achieved their sixth victory against FCB in the last 13 years of the championship.
The people of Basel made it surprisingly easy for the people of Zurich. In the almost empty Letzigrund, a concentrated and combative performance and strong Assan Ceesay were enough for the outsider. The Gambian striker started the decisive action 22 seconds after the break, beating Jasper van der Werff and crossing to the center of the penalty area in Basel. There Antonio Marchesano directed the ball half with his head, half with his arm in the goal.

That Ceesay could play a decisive role had already become apparent in the first half. All dangerous scoring chances came from him: twice he missed against Basel goalkeeper Djordje Nikolic and once fired over the gate. The Basel defense, which has to wait for reinforcement from new signing Timm Klose, was overwhelmed time and again against Ceesay.

Ciriaco Sforza’s team gave the impression to St. Gallen on Sunday that neither the numerous absences nor the lack of pace of the game after the quarantine would have a negative impact. It was completely different four days later in Zurich: there was a lack of intensity, ideas, assertiveness and movement in a storm, all that was needed to develop scoring opportunities. That is why the people of Basel had almost none. Pajtim Kasami gave the best chances to make it 1-1 in the 74th minute with a good shot and substitute Tician Tushi with a header seconds before the final whistle.
The Zurich team, which was the slightly better team in the weak game, continued its upward trend ten days after the 4-1 victory in Vaduz. It was the second victory in the second game with interim coach Massimo Rizzo.
