Sunrise is completely revamping internet and cell phone subscriptions and offering discounts for first-time families
Sunrise is launching a new subscription family and is changing its existing product portfolio. The current subscriptions called Freedom will be replaced by We subscriptions. For the first time, Sunrise is offering family discounts across the board.
Sunrise sees great potential for growth in families and communities, CEO André Krause said Thursday while introducing the new subscriptions at an online conference. Because families and communities, which make up around two-thirds of all households in Switzerland, are underrepresented in Sunrise’s customer base.
In a survey, more than 40 percent of households said they would purchase additional mobile phone subscriptions if there were discounts of 25 to 50 percent, Krause said. And half of all households would like a multi-SIM deal.
Sunrise now wants to attract them with the new products that will be sold from Monday. With the new mobile phone subscriptions, customers received the same lines with up to 60 percent off the same bill for each additional subscription.. Also, calls between all numbers on the same bill are free, even if family members are in other European or North American countries. It’s worth combining, Krause said.
Internet subscriptions up to 10 gigabits per second
The new Internet subscriptions increase the maximum speed up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbit / s) on fiber optics. Currently, the maximum speed is 1 Gbit / s. As before, there are discounts if someone combines Internet and TV with a mobile phone subscription.
“We hope the family offerings are a great success,” Krause said in an interview with the AWP news agency. However, it will take some time before the new subscriptions are widely accepted. Sunrise expects this to take one to two years. “The Swiss telecom customer is not the most willing to change,” said the CEO.
Are the new subscriptions really attractive?
With family discounts, Sunrise joins the group of the few providers that even have them. According to telecom expert Ralf Beyeler of internet comparison service Moneyland, so far it has only been Swisscom, Digitec and M-Budget. At Swisscom, however, the family discount only applies to customers who also use Swisscom to access the Internet at home.
In a Beyeler model calculation, Sunrise’s offering for a family of five is cheaper than that of the industry leader, but more expensive than Digitec’s. Even compared to the normal price of providers without familiar offerings, Sunrise is usually more expensive, the telecom expert analyzed. Customers would be even better off if they acted.
“The Sunrise family offering, on the other hand, can be interesting for customers who travel abroad a lot during the year and transfer large amounts of data there,” Beyeler said.
The Swiss subscription comparison service Dschungelkompass also analyzed the new offering and compared it to Swisscom and Salt.

The comparison is not conclusive, “since it also depends on the use of roaming or TV with more or less functions,” writes Dschungelkompass. But families and friends who want to split the mobile phone bill should “in most cases be cheaper than with previous Sunrise subscriptions,” believes telecom expert Oliver Zadori of Dschungelkompass. Depending on the intended use, there would still be “cheaper offers from other providers, especially when you pay attention to promotions.”
