In parts of eastern Switzerland, it has rained both in recent days and throughout August. A meteorologist classifies the event and anticipates the next weekend, which will be “completely different”.
After August was mostly dry, Petrus had a lot to catch up on on the last weekend of the month. And so eastern Switzerland has had exceptionally wet days. In Bad Ragaz, for example, 127 liters of rain fell per square meter in 72 hours. That’s 16 liters more than what normally falls there in a whole month of August. The Alprhein carried a lot of water towards Lake Constance and entered the promontory from Diepoldsau to Saint Margaret by the dam.

And also in the city of St. Gallen it rained a lot from Friday to Sunday. 122 liters per square meter fell, which corresponds to a good three-quarters of the rainfall that falls on average in August. Sometimes it looked like this on the city’s Mühleggbahn:
While August 2020 in St. Gallen was significantly below the long-term average in terms of rainfall, it is now significantly higher.
Too much rain for the floors
Meteonews meteorologist Roger Perret says about the heavy rains in recent days:
“Such an event only happens every five to ten years.”
For so much rain a special climatic condition is needed and this does not happen every year. Therefore, it is not surprising that the soils in many places in eastern Switzerland could not fully absorb the amount of water. “It was too much rain for the ground,” says Perret.
Now it’s getting drier and warmer
And what’s next after this rainy weekend? Will rubber boots replace sneakers and loafers in the days to come? No. The weather will be dry in the next few days, says Perret, adding:
“Next weekend will be very different.”
According to the meteorologist, it will be a warm autumn-summer in eastern Switzerland with more than 25 degrees in some places. Especially after a cold and wet weekend, he likes to hear that message.
