According to media reports, a new Catholic bishop will be elected in Chur on Monday. Hope rests with a moderate candidate.
This morning at a quarter past ten, the chapter of the Chur Cathedral will meet and elect a new bishop. At least that’s what the “Tagesanzeiger” and the Roman Catholic news portal kath.ch write, referring to “well-informed sources”.
For the election, the cathedral chapter relies on a list of three approved by the Pope. Hardly anyone knows who is on it. The choice is top secret.
Conservative, but conciliatory
However, some names are exchanged, including Urban Federer, the abbot of Einsiedeln Abbey. Chur’s episcopal vicar, Josef Maria Bonnemain, is also a possible candidate. The hospital chaplain considers himself conservative but conciliatory.
However, ultimately, all the names remain speculation. After all, the election of the bishopric in Chur has always been good for surprises in the past.
The interim bishop made breaches
However, it is time for the diocese to have a new bishop. After all, Peter Bücher has been headed by a transitional bishop for a year and a half.
The hope that this would bring peace after the controversial Bishop Vitus Huonder was not fulfilled.
On the contrary: this spring, transitional Bishop Martin Knopp, the popular vicar general of central Switzerland, again dismissed the divisions between progressive and traditionalist Catholics in the diocese.
The hope of the majority of the faithful in the Diocese of Chur, therefore, rests on a moderate candidate who will smooth things over. Either way, the Pope must subsequently approve the election. Therefore, it is not yet clear when the name of the new bishop will be announced.
