Dominic Stricker, 18, from Bern, beat Leandro Riedi, his Zurich Cup, in just over an hour 6: 2, 6: 4. For Stricker, current number 10 in the world youth ranking, it was the first victory in the ninth duel with Riedi, and on the last occasion the first Grand Slam title among the youth. The 1.91m-tall southpaw followed in the footsteps of Stan Wawrinka, the last Swiss junior to triumph in Paris in 2003.
On the list of local Junior Grand Slam winners, Stricker was joined by Heinz Günthardt (French Open and Wimbledon 1976), Roger Federer (Wimbledon 1998), Roman Valent (Wimbledon 2001) and Wawrinka. The Swiss junior winners are Martina Hingis, Belinda Bencic and Rebeka Masarova, who now plays for Spain.
Stricker achieved the milestone at Roland-Garros with an impressive offensive game. Even Riedi, who is believed to have similar potential, had little to oppose in the Parisian arena.
Of course, the Grand Slam title at the junior level is not a free pass for a breakthrough among the pros. Many winners were later established among men, but by no means all.
