Heavy rains also led to large runoff in several streams and canals in Glarus Süd. The Diesbach grew especially strongly. The cantonal road Diesbach – Betschwanden had to be closed on Saturday. In the first phase, 13 people were also evacuated. SBB had to cease operations on the Schwanden-Linthal route.
The pronounced southern reservoir with a foehn storm brought heavy rainfall to the south of Grosstal and to the Sernftal on Friday afternoon from around 4 p.m. In 12 hours, 70 to 100 mm of precipitation fell, which means that the amount was reached red warning level precipitation. The heavy rainfall hit largely saturated soils, causing rapid surface runoff. In the larger catchment areas, runoff from the flood was also driven by snowmelt. In particular, there were large runoffs in the larger streams and gullies in southern Grosstal and Sernftal.
Diesbach flood: residents evacuated as a precaution
The situation in Diesbach is particularly critical. On Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m., a resident alerted firefighters and reported that the Diesbach was getting too high. An on-site assessment confirmed the risk. The Diesbach brought not only a lot of water, but also debris. There was a risk of landings in the shell of the channel with outbreaks of the stream in the direction of the inhabited areas and the street.
The first decision was to close the canton road in the area of the Diesbach bridge. At the same time, SBB was informed that it had ceased operations on the Schwanden – Linthal route. At 9 am, 10 buildings with a total of 13 residents were evacuated from the Dornhaus district in Diesbach.
Attempts are currently being made to prevent landfall in the canal by dredging. More than 100 people and several excavators are in action. At the moment, a reliable prognosis about the further course is not possible. Natural hazard experts assess the situation on an ongoing basis. The subsequent course depends largely on the coming rains and the location in the catchment area.
