- Cyclone “Ianos” and another storm caused severe damage in parts of Greek coastal cities.
- Two people died and another is still missing.
- More than 600 people have been rescued from their homes or rescued by rescuers.
- The Athens-Thessaloniki train connection was interrupted due to damage to the railway line.
Images and videos on social media and in the Greek media show the trail of devastation: fallen trees and electric poles, cars washed away, sailboats that were washed ashore by wind and waves or sunk in the harbor. In many places, the streets are under water.
During the course of Saturday, “Ianos” passes by the west coast of the island of Crete, while it remains stormy in the north Aegean. In recent years, Greece has been hit by storms and heavy rains, and injuries and deaths are often to be lamented.
The older Greeks claim that such severe storms have never occurred before.
“He was hip-deep in water,” an 86-year-old man told Skai television in the hard-hit town of Karditsa on Saturday. “We used to have storms, but never that violent.”
