Stefan Küng wins his first national road racing championship title at the Swiss Märwil championship. The Thurgau creates something historic.
Küng is the first Swiss rider in history to triumph nationally in both the time trial and the road race in the same year. In July he topped the podium in the time trial for the fourth time in a row.
Although he had announced in the run-up to his home race that there was probably “not much gas left in the tank”, the European time trial champion was already ahead of the competition in the 10th of 17 laps. The 26-year-old rider traveled more than 70 km in thick fog as a soloist, at the finish line his lead was almost five minutes. In the fight for silver, Danilo Wyss beat Simon Pellaud down the stretch.
Küng stated that the road championship title has been one of those goals that he absolutely wants to achieve from the beginning of his career. “Well, in my sixth year as a pro, it worked, and I was still at home, on the track where I won my first bike race 16 years ago as a student. This is a wonderful end to an excellent season, ”said third place in the World Championship in the time trial.
Thus, the shirt with the white cross on a red background remains in the ranks of the French team of the World Tour Groupama-FDJ. A year ago, Küng’s teammate Sébastien Reichenbach had triumphed in Fischingen.
Chabbey follows Reusser
In the absence of Marlen Reusser – last year’s winner is in quarantine due to a positive case of Covid-19 nearby – there was a comparison between Elise Chabbey and Linda Indergand in the women’s race; the duo had set themselves apart from the competition from the start. The decision was made on the last climb just before the finish line. As a mountain specialist, Chabbey was, as expected, slightly stronger than Indergand, who primarily competes on mountain biking, and was celebrated as a Swiss champion for the first time, for the first time in cycling. At the beginning of her career, the 27-year-old from Geneva was successful as a canoeist, and in 2012 she even participated in the London Olympics.
Lara Krähemann secured the bronze medal in the chasing group of six’s sprint.
