Former Swiss sprinter Stefan Burkart dies at the age of 62 after a serious illness, according to various media reports.

He participated in two Olympic Games (1992, 1996), a World Championship and three European Championships and had national records of more than 100 (10.32) and 60m (6.61). In 2002, at the age of 44, he won an SM medal in third place over 60m.

Burkart was also successful as a bob booster and as a trainer in athletics and on the ice channel scene. He promoted Olympic medalists like Martin Annen, Gregor Stähli or Alex Baumann. Burkart’s wife Helen (née Barnett) finished fourth at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles with the British 4x400m relay. Her son Nishan is a talented soccer player. The 20-year-old forward was trained at Manchester United and now hopes to make the leap to the Bundesliga in Freiburg.
