Receiving tax money and paying bonuses is “strange and insensitive”: the Finance Commission wants the Federal Council to intervene in Switzerland.
A few weeks ago it became known that Swiss will pay bonuses for 2019. This caused some excitement, the Finance Commission of the National Council is also taking care of it, as SP National Councilor Celine Widmer said today in front of the media in her name.
The finance committee was very irritated that Swiss had paid bonuses to their management.
“The finance committee was very irritated that Swiss had paid bonuses to his management.” Irritated for the following reason: “The federal government has provided Switzerland with liquidity with the Covid loans. With the distribution of bonuses to management, this liquidity is partially withdrawn again. And that doesn’t work, ”says Widmer.
The federal government is making 1.5 billion Swiss francs available (tax money, Widmer emphasizes) and Swiss is even paying bonuses over the last year: “That’s strange and insensitive. It’s particularly shocking from a taxpayer’s perspective. “
Federal Council: Regulation not necessary
The Commission wanted to avoid exactly that, Widmer said. So he discussed a measure in the spring to prevent Swiss bonds from being paid to his own administration. “The Federal Council assured us at the time that the matter had already been addressed and that, therefore, it was no longer necessary to regulate it. For this reason, this motion was not taken to the Plenary. But it turned out different.
The agreement between the federal government and Switzerland does not regulate variable wages. There are no regulations, so the Commission states that the payment is not prohibited and is therefore legal. However, he wrote a letter to the Federal Council: “The Finance Commission unanimously demands that the Federal Council clearly state our position towards Switzerland and do everything in its power to ensure that Switzerland does not pay any bonuses until the Covid loans have been reimbursed. “
Switzerland awaits a reaction from the Federal Council
The Finance Department announced that the Federal Council would react in due course. Swiss writes that it has taken note of the decision of the Finance Commission and is now awaiting the reaction of the Federal Council.
At the same time, Swiss announced that it was not giving details on bonuses, but the variable salary components for management were more than 50 percent of base salary. And that means: the bonuses should be substantial. And, according to the Finance Commission, taxpayers shouldn’t pay them.
