- The canton of Lucerne was the first canton to start corona vaccines on Wednesday.
- The first person to be vaccinated is a 90-year-old resident of a nursing home.
- The first vaccinations have already been carried out in the cantons of Zug, Schwyz, Nidwalden and Appenzell Innerrhoden.
The first vaccination had been carried out, Lucerne health director Guido Graf said in the morning in front of the media. He received it from a 90-year-old woman in a home for the elderly and pensioners in a rural municipality of Lucerne.
The canton of Lucerne has around 500 doses of vaccine available at the start. The authorities have installed a vaccination center in the Allmend’s showroom. From there, the vaccination doses go first to nursing homes and old people’s homes. Mobile teams take them directly to the site and carry out vaccinations. Only later will the vaccination center also be used to vaccinate broader sectors of the population.
In the other cantons, too, vaccines are available to members of risk groups and nursing staff, and only later to all who wish to be vaccinated.
In addition to Lucerne, other cantons began vaccinating today. With the help of various general practitioners, around 100 elderly people were vaccinated at a Nidwalden nursing home. Fortunately, an overwhelming majority have agreed to get vaccinated, health director Michèle Blöchliger said in a message.
The canton of Appenzell-Innerrhoden vaccinated 13 people today and will follow 25 more tomorrow. Then it will continue next year. Also in Appenzell-Innerhoden everything went well, as the authorities say. The cantons of Schwyz and Zug are already vaccinated. There were nursing homes everywhere.
The first 107,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccination from manufacturer Pfizer / Biontech arrived in Switzerland by land on Tuesday. They were then distributed to the cantons by the army pharmacy. To achieve good protection, the vaccine, which is based on so-called messenger RNA technology, must be injected twice with an interval of three weeks.
