As a counselor, Matthias Kyburz is used to nature. But in Corona’s time, now that the OL World Cup has been canceled, Aarau, 30, dares to attempt a world record in different fields. He wants to run 50 kilometers on the treadmill against time. Set the new world record, which is just under three hours.
And it does! On Thursday afternoon at 5:40 p.m., Kyburz begins in a warehouse in Olten. He can be seen there for three hours on the live broadcast, running alone and sweating. The monotonous action is accompanied by interviews with racing experts, including marathon stars Viktor Röthlin and Tadesse Abraham.
After two hours, 56 minutes and 35 seconds, the four-time world champion orientation has crossed the line, or rather, his treadmill stops. For the 50 kilometers, Kyburz needs less than a minute less than its German predecessor Florian Neuschwander (2:57:24 hours). The new world record for the ribbon marathon now belongs to a Swiss!
The panting record, still completely out of breath: “As expected, it was a very difficult thirty kilometers. But good that I did it without major problems. It is great for me! But it was not as light as it sometimes seemed from the camera point of view. “I never felt completely at my limit, but my legs started cramping and I got a little dizzy,” said Kyburz, “but I made my way and fought to the end.”
The project, which started at the initiative of the national orientation coach, is linked to a fundraiser on April 16, the day of solidarity. After all, the overall winner of the 2018 World Cup was able to “reach” CHF 6,500 for Swiss Solidarity. Kyburz has truly earned himself an extensive recovery. “It’s easy to relax now,” he says. “I will sit on the couch at home and eat a lot of chocolate for the next two weeks, where else?” When he says goodbye, the live broadcast ends with the words: “We’ll see each other, but not so fast on a treadmill!”
