A Swiss tennis player built near water? Sure, Roger Federer (38) is known for letting his emotions run wild on the court.
Switzerland’s second-class man is usually a bit more reserved. Stan Wawrinka (35) hits his forehead with his finger. Tears? Oddly enough.
Behind closed doors, things can be different, says former Wawrinka coach Magnus Norman on the “Tennis with an Accent” podcast. The Swede remembers the minutes before the US Open 2016 final between Stan and Novak Djokovic. Normally I try to keep it short. Stan doesn’t like receiving too much information shortly before a game, “says Norman, who worked with Wawrinka until the friendly division in 2017.” Too many tactical instructions would drive his head crazy. I have to be very clear.
The coach himself also cried
Again, Norman doesn’t go into too much detail in the locker room. “I explained to him how incredibly proud he was of his accomplishments,” said Norman. “He was probably nervous, so he started crying during my speech.”
He himself also began to cry. “Shortly before the match, we had a very emotional moment, just before the referee called the match.”
The rest is history: Wawrinka takes the next three sets after losing the first round and wins her third Grand Slam title.
Thanks to tears before the game, Norman believes, who will be voted ATP Coach of the Year at the end of the 2016 season: “This moment allowed us to let our emotions run wild. Stan came out on the court and played his best tennis. (for example)
