Fever, dry cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these are the most common symptoms of coronavirus. Recently, doctors have been reporting more and more skin rashes and discolorations, affecting children and young adults in particular, who otherwise have no or only symptoms.
Usually only a few people report frostbite-like skin changes, and this only in the winter months. But now the practices of the skin and the hospitals of patients with these symptoms are literally overwhelmed, as the “World” reports.
It starts with a slight redness and swelling.
“In the past few weeks we have had more and more dermatology practice consultations presenting these pseudohielobites to children,” says chief physician Chalid Assaf for dermatology at Helios Spital in Krefeld (D) al “Welt.”
Most cases would start with a slight redness and swelling and turn bluish after about two days. This often leads to itching and pain. The feet are affected more frequently than the hands.
The skin change appears to be harmless.
Dermatologists are still baffled as to why these bluish tones occur and why children in particular are affected. Assaf: “Right now we are assuming that it is an inflammatory process of the skin, in which the vessels are also involved.” It is a specific immunological reaction pattern. This occurs similarly with other viral diseases, the doctor said.
There is positive news: skin changes appear relatively late in the course of the disease, but they almost always heal within ten to twelve days without complications and on their own. (sib)
