The director of the Federal Police Office (Fedpol) Nicoletta della Valle suspects a terrorist history of the stabbing in Lugano. She said that at the press conference in Bellinzona.
According to an initial reconstruction, a 28-year-old Swiss citizen residing in the Lugano area attacked two women with a knife. The perpetrator was later detained by a couple of clients and eventually arrested by the police.
No mortal danger
According to an initial medical examination, one of the victims suffered serious but non-fatal injuries, while the other woman was only slightly injured.
“We started with the checks and with the police of the Canton of Ticino we tried to understand the circumstances of the case and possibly confirm the motive,” said Cathy Maret of fedpol RSI. In particular, they seek available information about the perpetrator of the attack.
Police were following up on evidence that the woman had expressed sympathy for the ISIS terrorist militia, she said at the press conference. According to the Ticino canton police commander Matteo Cocchi, the police knew her. “The police are now working flat out, for example, to evaluate the warehouse camera recordings to get more conclusions,” Cocchi told RSI.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation.
